Archipelago 2017
Archipelago 2017
An archipelago, sometimes called an island group or island chain, is a chain or cluster of islands. The word archipelago is derived from the Greek– arkhi- ("chief") and – pélagos ("sea") through the Italian arcipelago. In Italian, possibly following a tradition of antiquity, the Arcipelago (from medieval Greek) was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands (since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands). It is now used to refer to any island group or, sometimes, to a sea containing a large number of scattered islands.
The concept for this project started 20 years ago when I was living in Venice, rowing on the lagoon and searching within my inner self. I was very close to nature, researching and discovering new forms and colours that the lagoon and the minor islands of Venice were offering me, and they provided me with an opportunity to unite my thoughts. I spent time exploring more deeply my lesser known thoughts and the mystical qualities of time and rhythm. My journeys and flights over the lagoon gave me yet another fascinating perspective of my Archipelago, inspiring me to produce intricate abstract forms of bright colours in my art work which simultaneously function as maps to find one’s own treasures of the heart. Each island represented has its own name and history ,which the public may read about during the exhibition.
